At the same time, as photogenic drawing and the Daguerreotype were being developed, voltaic electricity (i.e. from a battery) was used to engrave the copy of an image on the surface of metal. Thomas Spencer of Liverpool made the discovery that copper was deposited on the copper plate or ?negative metal? for which he was granted a patent in 1840. Professor Jacobi of St Petersburg made a similar discovery.
