John Leighton was an highly talented artist accomplished in a number of disciplines. He was made a Life Fellow of the Society of Arts in 1851; his contributions at their meetings were mainly, although not exclusively on artistic matters. The British Museum contains albums of proofs of wood-engravings, he produced for the Dalziel Brothers. In addition to producing book illustrations, he also designed many beautiful book covers. Many of his designs are in the Bodleian Library. He also wrote books and articles,often using the pseudonym of 'Luke Limmer'.
