William Pontey [1782-1831], who had a nursery near Huddersfield, wrote a number of highly regarded books on trees. On the title page, he describes himself as "Planter and Forest Pruner" to the Dukes of Bedford. In the advertisement at the end of the book, it states he will give "Directions and Designs in every Department of Ornamental Gardening.
