AUTOGRAPH LETTER Signed, to Mrs Smiles, 3pp, Trafalgar Studios, Chelsea, 31 March 1883,
THOMAS NELSON MacLEAN R.B.A. [1845-1894] Sculptor.

he returned from Scotland three weeks ago, 'commissions were the cause of my long residence in Aberdeen. I finished the marble bust of Principal Brown' and made a model of Mr John Stewart of Banchory, 'would be delighted to show the model of his bust and any other work to you on Wednesday'.

Principal Brown is presumably Dr David Brown [1803-1897] Principal of Aberdeen Free Church College. John Stewart [1819-1887] was a successful comb manufacturer in Aberdeen who invested in railways and steamships. He purchased the Banchory Devenick estate in 1872. His son, David, a graduate of Aberdeen University married Dr Brown's eldest daughter, which is probably the link between the two commissions. Thomas Nelson MacLean spent most of his working life in London, where he was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy.
