6 maps; xvi+380pp; a little spotting on a few leaves.
Although Herbert was half-blind, he led a remarkably adventurous life, travelling to remote parts of the Balkans, Turkey and the Middle East. He became so involved in Balkan affairs, he was not once, but twice, offered the throne of Albania. Here in this posthumously published work, he records his travels before the First World War, when he observed the changes in Turkish political life. In the chapter on Yemen, he writes movingly of entering the town of Sanaa after the famine of 1904.
