*Jever is in Lower Saxony on the north German coast. Following the death of her father and brother she ruled Jever, and in 1531 expelled the East Frisians, who had invaded in 1527. For restoring the independence of the city, she, who remained unmarried, became a symbol of its identity and unoffically it is called 'Marienstadt'.

*Between 1634-43, Marie, eldest daughter of Charles de Lorraine, Duke of Guise, was exiled to Florence with her family, and became close to the Medicis and she developed a love of Italian music. In 1671, her nephew then the Duke of Guise died and she became the last member of the family inheriting great wealth and estates, which she used to patronise her interests including music and education. In the cartouche of this print is a solitary tree standing in a forest of stumps, to indicate her position as the last survivor in the family. In the 1670s, she created a musical ensemble that played music by French and Italian composers including Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
