*The drawing was made with a soft pencil so the lines are not as fine as those on the lithograph. The print and drawing have evidently been together for a long time, both are framed in similar early 19th century good quality gilt frames. Each overall approx. 14 x 12.5in Both with an old inscription 'Flaxman' on reverse of the frames Recently reset in new mounts. The lithograph was later printed by M. &N. Hanhart with a facsimile signature of Gunn's. Rev. William Gunn [1750-1841] was a Norfolk parson who was also an antiquary, linguist, connoisseur and traveller. He made a trip to Italy to investigate antiquities and study documents in the libraries. In the 1790s, at Rome, he and Flaxman became friends. He was elected to both the Society of Arcadians and the Accademia della Crusca. Gunn's papers are now in the Norfolk Record Office.
