*There is much conjecture about which early picture Tofanelli's painting was based on. Holbrook Portraits of Dante from Giotto to Raffael (1911) suggests the so-called Yale Dante, an old portrait at Yale University.

*Emma Deering was the daughter of John Deering, barrister, and Harriet Armstrong who were married in 1805. The Deerings lived at Mountjoy Square, Dublin and Derrybrusk in Enniskillen. She married the Rev. Joseph North, son of Roger North of Kilduffe House, King's County, in 1845. The couple eventually moved to England. Provenance: By family descent.

*Lord Petersham [1780-1851] was gazetted Major of the Queen's in 1803. He was the dandy par excellence and became a favourite subject of caricature. He was the model for Lord Fitzbooby in Disraeli's 'Coningsby'.
