*This scarce Dublin edition was published in the same year as the first edition in Edinburgh. It is one of very few cookery book published in Ireland in the 18th century. According to Oxford, this book is based on Mrs Maciver's 'Cookery and Pastry' first published in 1773. Mrs Frazer is described on the title of the Edinburgh edition as 'Sole Teacher of these Arts in Edinburgh, Several years Colleague, and afterwards Successor to Mrs MÕiver deceased'.

*Francis Hinde Groome [1851-1902] was an eminent gypsy scholar, who came to know gypsies intimately while at Oxford University. The Oxford DNB says of Gypsy Folk Tales, 'it contains over seventy tales with variants from many lands, and the elaborate introduction is a monument of erudition and ripe scholarship'. Groome's theory was that gypsies had probably disseminated many European folk beliefs and tales, some of which had originated in India. He attributed to them the introduction to Europe of playing cards and puppetry, among other skills.
