*Frances Hodgkins was born in New Zealand. In 1915 she started to paint in oils. 'Zepped' presumably meant being killed by German zepplins. The recipient, Mrs Jenner, was the wife of Henry Jenner who was responsible for the revival of the old Cornish language (author of a 'Handbook to the Cornish Language' 1904) and was prominent in other Cornish historical movements of the period.

*Part of the Haddon Hall Library series. William Moorcroft (1872-1945), Potter, was born in Burslem. Having studied at the South Kensington School of Art, he returned to the Potteries and worked as a designer for James McIntyre & Co. In 1913 he left to set up his own pottery, which continues to this day. Contains William Moorcroft's distinctive sepia printed bookplate, the design of which is inspired by illuminated initials from medieval manuscripts.

JAPANESE BOOK. WATANABE GENTAI or RINROKU 1749-1822. Japanese Artist. Rinroku gokan. Numerous woodcut illustrations, printed in black, and white of figures, furniture, 66pp; some worming in upper margin of some leaves. 27.5 x 18 cm, orig. blue wrappers, with title, slight damage to letterpiece, some loosening to threads on spine, Edo : Kinkado? *Watanabe Gentai was the son of the painter Watanabe Shinsui (1720-67). He studied under his father, Bincho and Nakayama Koyo, but also took in the flower-and-bird paintings of the Nanpin school. He became a Buddhist monk and took the name Gentai. This work is influenced by a respect for Chinese painting and features a number of seals. From an early French collection with note written in ink inserted.
