    *Jafar Pasha Al-Askari was born in Mosul. He became an officer of the Ottoman empire, trained in both Constantinople and Germany. He was captured by the British when leading a Sanusi force in Cyrenaica in 1916. He was taken to Cairo, where he met T.E. Lawrence. He swore an oath of allegiance to Britain and was appointed commander in chief of the regular Arab forces in the Hedjaz. He was awarded the George Cross, having already won the Iron Cross.

In 1915, he was made political officer to the Red Sea Northern Patrol, and was closely connected with the Arab revolt.
